Films for Freedom, India : Web Presence
Needs:
They are group of leading documentary and short film-makers, like Anand Patwardhan, Rakesh Sharma
and more, organizing film festivals through out the world and creating a large database of related
films, film makers, technicians and theaters. They had a logo and few other printed publicity
materials designed by a famous designer from print and packaging industry. They needed a dynamic
website with easy-to-use administrative tools to capture and display data about films, filmmakers,
technicians and film enthusiasts, along with a content management tool to update news and events
on the website regularly. They wanted their website to reflect the look and feel of their logo,
though they agreed the mood of the initiative is not completely represented in the logo. They
wanted us to go beyond the existing personality of their logo and enhance its visual identity by
adding an 'issue-based movement'-like feel, while creating the website. |

Challenges:
How to create a web presence, reflecting an identity created for an entirely different media,
which is print? How to give it an 'issue-based movement' feel without changing its basic personality?
How to make the administrative tools as simple as possible so that the members, who are mostly
non-technical can easily handle them? |

Solutions:
We used the color scheme of their logo for the layout of the website. For the entire website, we
used Courier font, which is similar to the font used in the logo. The typewriter-like look of
Courier font made the website look more like a typed bulletin they usually distribute at festivals
and events. When we required an image to symbolically express the spirit of the whole movement,
we looked for a real-life photograph of the group members, instead of using a stack image. We
found a photograph of the members, demanding freedom for the films, taken at their inaugural
festival. We thought, it should be the one, as it represents the right spirit of the entire
movement. But, the realistic look of the photograph was never supported by the stylized personality
of their logo. So we gave it a flat-colored, block-print like look to match with the logo and it
worked.
We made the administrative tools right-based, moderated by 3 levels of Administrator having 3 levels
of rights and provided an dynamic administrative toolbar, for the users having different administrative
rights, to avoid the complicacy of a separate control panel.
