Needs:
A group of writers, editors and literary enthusiasts wanted to create an online archive of vernacular
literature and a community around that. They needed a steady technology and striking visual personality
representing their strongly recognizable cultural identity.
Challenges:
How to depict different cultural activities like reading, writing, publishing and painting along
with a strong representation of a group of individuals behind the idea through the logo? How to
represent the ethno-cultural identity of a vernacular literary group? How to optimize a website
where content is not in English?
Solutions:
We created a series of figures in different actions suggesting a group having members involved
with multiple activities. We simulated selected indigenous forms of painting and figure drawing
while creating the figures, to bring out the visual personality of a vernacular literary group.
We identified four most dramatic ones among the figures and put them together forming the logo.
We used a vibrant color scheme, commonly used over the region for different socio-cultural
occasions and thus being very familiar to their end-users or readers as well as their editors
and writers. We created a simple and customizable layout with fewer images to accommodate maximum
amount of information, making it perfect for an online archive.
We created a simple and easy-to-use registration module with authentication, user tracking
system, site tracking system and content management system. As the major part of the content is
not in English, we could not optimize the textual content for search engines. We tried to find
right keywords and phrases and optimized the HTML content as much as possible. The site became
one of the first 5 results if a person searches for related keywords in major search engines.
